Taboon – Middle Eastern Cafe

Today is Monday… Mum has the day off. I don’t have any Thermomix Demonstrations today. We need Nespresso pods. The sales are on and I need some new intimate apparel items as well as some black trousers. It only means one thing on the Gold Coast: – ROBINA SHOPPING CENTRE.

Coming from Sydney, Robina while very good, is still bit of a let down compare to Sydneyย City Shopping, but it does the trick. The main thing we needed to purchase was Nespresso Pods, God forbid if we ever ran out of those ๐Ÿ™‚ The house might go into melt down! The other great thing about shopping (when you have a purpose) is you get to enjoy lunch out afterwards and you feel like you have earnt it, pushing your way through holiday shopping traffic, fighting through the sales items etc… etc…

Taboon

Anyway, when a trip to Robina is in order we usual visit one of two place. The Beijing Place for Yum Cha or Taboon for Middle Eastern food. I actually felt like Yum Cha, but it’s Monday and it’s closed so Taboon it was! I have been to Taboon many times and tried most things on the menu… all of which are extremely tasty. I would love to get up early enough on the weekend to try their Middle Eastern breakfast as I think that would be a real treat! Or maybe even go for dinner one night! But I love going out for lunch on the fabulous Gold Coast, what else can I say?

They are open Sunday – Thursday 9 am – ย 8pm, ย Friday – Saturday 9am – 9pm

Taboon Oven

The restaurant is named after the Oven which produces the most deliciously light, hot pita bread I have ever tasted!

Taboon was voted Best modern middle eastern Restaurant on the Gold Coast in 2012 and I think it is still amazing. My next door neighbour introduced it to me and I think I have been there more times than him since!

Ahhhhh The Pita Bread

This is a Quote from their website, that pretty much sums up their food; “Taboon takes a fresh and exciting look at traditional Middle Eastern food. Our cuisine draws its influence from Marrakesh to Istanbul, Cairo to Beirut with a big stop in Tel Aviv. It is unique and quirky and has been embraced by locals from Byron Bay to Brisbane”. Check out their website atย www.taboon.com.auย if you would like to know anything else about them!

Back to the food! So we can have a little bit of everything, mum and I like to share… It means that we get to try more things and have a few more taste sensations. So on todays menu is probably my all time favourite, the humus with mushrooms and caramelised onions. It comes with a serving of pita bread and really is a meal in itself.

Humus with Mushrooms and Caramelised onions

At $13.50 it isn’t cheap, (really nothing at Taboon is inexpensive) but it is delicious and you are definitely paying for quality and freshness at this restaurant.

Empty Humus

This is what is left, ALWAYS!

Mum always orders the sweet mint tea, which she says is delicious, but I’m not a fan of mint or sweet tea, so I really don’t like it, but everyone else who drinks it raves.

It comes in a nice pot at least ๐Ÿ™‚

For main we ordered the Grilled Bedouin Salad… We hadn’t had this before, but we had eaten the lamb which is always underdone, (pink) perfectly seasoned and succulent and again, we were not disappointed!

Grilled Bedouin

It doesn’t look big, but it is!

I couldn’t finish even 1/3 of the bowl I was so full so $23.50ย for this may seem a bit pricy, but it is so delicious I don’t really care ๐Ÿ™‚ They have things like Pita Pocket Sandwiches that are around $12, but can be shared between two people they are so generous and their lunch bowls are only $14 and you should get it to takeaway so you can eat the left overs after.

This is 1/3 of the bowl on my plate!

Oh and that little seafood’s thing in the top right hand corner of the plate is a felafel prawn! Divine!

Combines Felafel and Prawns, what’s not to like?

We also had a taste of the Spinach and Leek Falafel, which they have around winter time as leeks are in season then and it was very tasty as well.

Toward the end I had to undo the button on my jeans and take deep breaths. All up the meal, including the drinks and extra little bits came to $49.90. I think that $25 a head is an acceptable lunch price for the quality of the food and the rest needed after a well deserved shopping day!

One day I will have room to try some of these!

They do have a wonderful selections of sweets, but I have never been able to try any as I am always too full. Next time I’m just going to have some nice tea and sweets! (yeah right)

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to comment or ask me some questions and I will try to get back to you ASAP. If you would like a recipe, just ask and I will see what I can do! ๐Ÿ™‚

Enjoy Irresponsibly!

Hi. I love this place. Unfortunately I had to move across the world and won’t be back. Wondering if you could get the recipe for the chicken lunch bowl. Miss it!

Hi Anna, no tongue prints LOL, but the bread scraped it all up ๐Ÿ™‚ and the Felafel prawns aren’t spicy at all, just delicious! Liz x
