Finding the Best Coffee – Roost@53 #20

Roast@53 Coffee

Roost@53 is a little gem tucked away on 53 Johnston St in Southport. If you didn’t know it was there, you would miss it! Check out their website HERE for all their information.

Roast@53 Coffee

Well This cafe, was one we had being going to for a couple of weeks, but never managed to get there, so we locked it in. What a find! It is sort of a bit of an oasis in the middle of Johnston street… It is noisy, as traffic is driving past all the time and it is set in the middle of an industrial area… but the food is good and cheap and the coffee is great!

Roast@53 Coffee

Outside area, could get a bit cold in winter, but really Queensland doesn’t have a proper winter.

The cafe is attached to Canadian Kitchen Catering run by Chris and Linda Cosh. They are a major sponsor and caterer for the Tour De Cure. Check our the FACEBOOK PAGE for more information on this wonderful cause.

They have a $10 lunch special everyday which changes. During the week they have a truck stop style menu, but it gets a little classier on the weekends with a black board menu. They are open from 5 am – 4pm, Monday to Friday and 6 am – 1pm on a Saturday.

Roast@53 Coffee

Now the coffee is a house blend specially roasted for Roost@53 right here on the Gold Coast, so it is always fresh and the beans are available for purchase if you would like to take a little bit of the cafe home with you!

The food portions are very generous and you will see below, very reasonable priced.

My piccolo was smooth and delicious. I had two! This is a picture of the second one as I drank the first one with out even thinking about photos… Sometimes you just need coffee PRONTO! Oh and every coffee comes with a little home made biscuit. YUM!

Roast@53 Coffee

Piccolo $3.50

Tanya enjoyed her coffee and commented on how smooth it was, except that the milk could have been a bit hotter. She also got a little too excited and stirred her coffee before taking a photo!

Large Cappuccino Coffee $5

Sophia’s Flat white was also smooth, so much so she ordered another as well and gave this coffee her highest score so far.

Roast@53 Coffee

Medium Flat White $4

Sim’s said her hot chocolate was delicious, but needed to be hotter as well.

Roast@53 Coffee

Sim’s drink also came as a part of the breakfast special. Order a coffee/hot chocolate and a bacon and egg roll and it only costs small $7, Medium $8 and Large $9. So that is a great deal for breakfast on the run. Sim mentioned that it was good, but had a bit too much BBQ sauce on it for her, so make sure you stipulate what sauce you would like and how much.

Roast@53 Coffee

Standard Bacon and Eggs (I had mine without toast) was only $10. It was a huge portion that I struggled to get through. The eggs were a bit over cooked, but I should have specified that I wanted them runny as most people don’t like their eggs that way.

Roast@53 Coffee

Bacon and Eggs $10

Sophia said her omelette was delicious, with just the right amount of feta, mushrooms and spinach, it was only $10 and really didn’t’ need the toast… even though it was yummy and homemade!

Roast@53 Coffee

Omelette $10

Tanya will always goes for the sweet option and chose pancakes this morning, especially since they were a bargain at only $7.

Roast@53 Coffee

I have to say, although I’m not a sweet tooth, especially for breakfast, but these pancakes looked delicious and were light and fluffy, served with maple syrup, but Tanya said it needed a little ice cream or cream (of course it did) and as you can see, a few strawberries for good measure!

Roast@53 Coffee

Pancakes $7

So all in all a pretty good breakfast with great coffee. The staff were genuinely nice and interested in the blog and where very forth coming with lots of information about what they do. You can feel that they genuinely like their jobs and it shows. They also informed me that the day we came was the barista’s day off, so I was suitably impressed with the fact that everyone made great coffee, even thought their normal barista wasn’t there!

So here are our scores

Tan Sim Liz Sophia
Food 8 8 8 8
Drinks 7.5 8 8.5 9
Service 8 8 8 7
Atmosphere 7 7 6 7
